Recently named a top race by the Washington Post Express, the Parkway Classic is an area favorite for its gorgeous route, capped field size, and runner amenities.  

Now in its 28th year, the Parkway Classic is also the host to the BAE Systems MacArthur Cup, a team competition for active military, and is a primary sponsor of the Boys & Girls Club of Alexandria.  You?ll also see 50+ members of Back On My Feet - DC participating in this year?s event.

Thanks to our registration software, we can assign your number and have your packet available for pick up at the Pacers Running Store of your choosing the weekend prior to the race. You do not need to let us know where you are picking up your packet; just walk in and get your gear! Yes- it's that easy!

Reminder: you must wear the timing tag assigned to you for this specific event. No tag = no time.

PACKET MAILING

  • You may elect to register for packet mailing for a $25 fee.
  • You must register for packet mailing during online registration.
  • Mailed packets will arrive approximately 5 days prior to the event to the address contained in your race registration.

If you believe your address will change between now and race day please do not register for packet mailing. Not responsible for lost or forwarded packets.

 

RACE LOCATION

The Parkway Classic is a point to point race starting at Mt. Vernon Estates and finishing in Old Town, Alexandria at Oronoco Bay Park.

 

 

RUNNER TRANSPORTATION TO THE START LINE

The majority of participants elect to take the complimentary bus transportation from the finish to the start line.

YOU MUST HAVE YOUR BIB NUMBER WITH YOU WHEN BOARDING THE BUSES. THIS IS YOUR IDENTIFICATION AS A REGISTERED RUNNER.

Bus Transportation Details

  • We are providing transportation from Old Town, Alexandria and Pentagon City, Arlington.
  • Please see below for important details, including RSVP instructions for the Arlington bus.

Alexandria Shuttles

  • Alexandria bus transportation begins at 5:30AM
  • The last Alexandria bus leaves at 7:00AM.
  • We suggest boarding by 6:15AM or you will encounter a wait to board.
  • 10 Mile and 5K runners will be transported from Alexandria to Mt. Vernon and Belle Haven via race-provided bus transportation.
  • The Alexandria stops are located along North Fairfax Street at Wythe Street.
  • You do not need to RSVP for Alexandria shuttles.

SPECIAL NOTE: The 5K and 10 Mile board DIFFERENT buses. 10 Mile runners will board on the west side of Fairfax Street; 5K will load on the east side of Fairfax Street.  Look for signs. 

THE LAST BUS IN ALEXANDRIA WILL LEAVE AT 7:00AM. Late runners will not be accommodated. See below for parking information.

Arlington Shuttles

  • We are providing complimentary shuttles for 10 Mile runners ONLY from Pentagon City.
  • Sorry 5K participants, this bus route does not pass the 5K start.
  • You must RSVP by noon Wednesday, April 18 to utilize this service.

Post-Race Shuttles

  • We have improved our post-race shuttle offerings.
  • Shuttles will be available from 8:00am - 12:00pm on race day to shuttle participants to King Street METRO, Pacers Alexandria, and Pentagon City (same location as bus pick up).
  • These buses will run on a 10-15 minute loop.

PLEASE NOTE: Pre-race complimentary bus service is for registered runners only

  • Family, friends and spectators will not be allowed to board any of the pre-race shuttle buses.
  • Friends and family may board the post-race shuttle but must be accompanied by a runner.

Alexandria Bus Loading Zone

  • The buses load at 700 N. Fairfax Street in Old Town Alexandria. 
  • Buses will stretch from Wythe to First Street along Fairfax Street.

Public Transportation

  • METRO does not open early for this event.
  • Please make alternate arrangements.  
  • There are bike racks in and around the finish area. 

Mt. Vernon Estates

  • DO NOT ENTER the Mt. Vernon Circle after 6:00am.
  • Only buses will be allowed to enter the circle after 6:00am.
  • The GW Parkway will shut down at or before 6:30am. 
  • You will not be allowed to drop off in the circle.

Start of the 5K Race

  • The 5K race starts at 8:00am.
  • The starting line is located approximately at the intersections of Belle Haven Road and GW Parkway; near the Belle Haven Marina.
  • The GW Parkway will shut down at or before 6:30am. 
  • Parking may be limited in and around the start of the 5K, so we suggest either taking the shuttles to the start line, or being dropped of by another person.
  • There is NO transportation back to the start of the 5K from the finish line.

Proper Drop-Off Instructions

  • Please have your ride or taxi take Richmond Highway (Route 1) to Mt. Vernon Memorial Parkway.
  • Head north on Mt. Vernon Memorial Parkway to Country Road 623.
  • Get dropped off either at the intersection (where safe) or at the bus turn around area on Mt. Vernon Memorial Parkway just east of the intersection.
  • Be cognizant of traffic for drop offs.
  • Drop off areas are approximately 800 meters from the circle.  
  • This area is not manned by volunteers or police.

Parking at Canal Plaza (Alexandria)

  • Free underground parking is available at 99 Canal Plaza.
  • Please note road closures and follow directions of Pacers Events staff and Alexandria Police.

Alexandria Street Parking

  • Limited street parking is available in and around the finish area.
  • To avoid delay, consider parking west of Washington Street and walking the handful of blocks to bus loading.

Additional Information

  • There is no parking or access to Fairfax Street between Pendleton and First Street. 
  • Alexandria VIP Parking VIP parking for medical personnel, staff, invited guests, and vendors is located at 700 N. Fairfax Street. Please present placard for entry.
  • Arlington (Pentagon City) Pentagon Parking Ample parking is available in the Pentagon parking lot located across from the Pentagon City Mall parking garage on Army Navy Drive.
  • Arlington Street Parking Street parking is available in and around Pentagon City. There is no fee for meters on Sundays.

Mt. Vernon Estates

  • DO NOT PARK AT MT. VERNON ESTATES. 
  • Please help us keep the Ladies of Mt. Vernon happy by not parking in their lots.

ROAD CLOSURES

  • Mt. Vernon Circle - Closure occurs as early as 6:00am.
  • GW Parkway between Mt. Vernon Estates & Franklin St - Closures occur as early as 6:30am.
  • Franklin Street between Washington St and Union St - Closures occur as early as 7:00am
  • Union St from Franklin St to Oronoco St - Closure occurs as early as 7:00am.
  • Union St at Oronoco St to Oronoco Bay Park and Pendleton between Fairfax St and Union St - Closure will occur at 6:00pm Saturday.

Please note that US Park Police and Alexandria Police may close the streets earlier than published based on the race morning conditions and traffic needs.

SPECTATORS

  • Spectators tend to congregate along Union Street.
  • Spectators are allowed to view along any portion of the course, however, should be cognizant of road closures.
  • Bikes will not be allowed on the parkway or the course, but are allowed on the bike path.

 

 

ON COURSE SUPPORT

  • Restrooms and water stops will be available at the starts, finish, and along the course.
  • Please refer to our course map for details.

 

MEDICAL SUPPORT

  • Medical support is managed by Alexandria Fire/EMS.
  • In addition, we have medical volunteers stationed at the finish.

If you need medical assistance, please flag one of the 50+ officers located at each intersection of the course OR ask for assistance at any one of the water stations. In addition, bike and gator medics will be patrolling the course.

 

SAG BUS

  • We will have a sag bus following the last runner.
  • This sag bus is manned by a nurse.
  • If you feel like you cannot complete the event, please board the sag bus.
  • You will also be asked to board if you fall behind our course time limits.

POST RACE CELEBRATION

Celebrate your accomplishment with friends and family at Oronoco Bay Park. We will have post race food and refreshments for runners as well as music.

Must be 21 to consume alcohol.

BAE Systems is proud to sponsor the MacArthur Cup Competition. The MacArthur Cup is given to the service with the fastest team time (top 5, one must be female).

In addition to the cup, BAE Systems donates $1000 to the service organization?s benevolent fund.
